Kandava county was added to Tukuma county in 2021, when the regional reform was introduced. During this time, some Kandavians have concluded that the promised benefits have not been achieved, it has become even worse.

The author of the initiative, Signe Ezeriņa, head of the Kandava Parish Advisory Council: “They have not had such economic thinking, because the cultural center is sad, there is no sports hall, the music school in Tukuma is generally under criticism.”

Anita, a resident of Kandava: “It’s definitely better to be alone. We want something more to happen to us. We have less of everything now.”

Tukumnieks Agris: “I think it would be better to disconnect them. Their own money, their own businessas before.”

Both Kandav residents and Tukum residents have collected more than 2,000 signatures for the separation of Kandava county from Tukum county. The letter was submitted to the Saeima, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM), and the local government. There they say – we have taken note, but it is not our competence to decide on it.

The Chairman of the Tukuma County Council, Gundars Važa (Union of Latvian Regions), stated in a written reply that the questions regarding the separation of the county within the old administrative boundaries are being considered by the Saeima:

“Most likely, a decision will also be prepared for the council meeting, where the deputies will be invited to take note of the residents’ desire to change the administrative border of the territory of Tukuma district.”

Meanwhile, VARAM said that the reasons why residents are not satisfied should be understood at the beginning.

“The first job that should be done is to look at why people are unhappy with the life they have right now. And maybe that doesn’t result in separation or separation, but maybe that there are other tools that can be used to solve it ,” said VARAM Deputy State Secretary for Regional Development Ilze Oša.

The Ministry could initiate changes in the law in the Saeima, but at the beginning it wants to understand the situation in Tukuma region, and it also refers to the year 2026, when VARAM’s task will be to evaluate the results of the regional reform. Meanwhile, the currently known closest changes in the regional reform are expected in 2029, when five national cities will be merged with counties. It is true that this norm is also contested by the local authorities, and probably the politicians will decide not to implement this idea.
