No matter how big the forest is in the property – one or a hundred hectares, it is essential for every forest owner to know what grows or does not grow in his forest, what the forest land is like, what possibilities of use and future perspectives. The more you know about your forest, the better steward you will be. In forestry, the statement that “my forest is good because it has a lot of mushrooms” will not really work. To be sure of the value of his forest, the owner must carry out a forest inventory.

Why is a forest inventory necessary?

As already mentioned, first of all, so that the owner himself knows what grows, does not grow, lives and happens in his forest. The results of the forest inventory are also taken into account when calculating the real estate tax, and the inventory data is also necessary if you want to develop the forest yourself or sell it to another owner or forest developer. In the same way, the inventory data will be required if the owner wants to apply for any funding or co-financing from the European Union.

Specific information about the composition of the forest property will be useful to state authorities if, for example, a natural disaster occurs in the property or in the surrounding area – fire, flood. Rescuers will be able to act much faster, knowing what awaits them in the forest – where and what are the forest roads, where are ditches or other water bodies, which can both help as water intake points and hinder movement and rescue operations, etc.

How often should the forest be inventoried?

The Forest Law in force stipulates that the owner of the forest is obliged to conduct an initial forest inventory on his property and to conduct a repeated forest inventory at least once every 20 years.

So, if you have been the owner of the forest for many years, it is worth checking when the last inventory was taken. As if it already seems that what can be important can happen in the forest that is not “disturbed” by cutting or other economic activity? However, over the years, the forest may have been affected by storms, broken trees that cannot be seen “from the outside” at all. It is even more important to carry out a new inventory if any activities have taken place – felling, new growth, etc

An inventory cannot be done by simply walking around your property and concluding that “everything is the same as it was”, because there is a certain procedure and regulations that must be followed in the inventory process. According to the specialists of SIA “Baltu koks” – the forest inventory can be compared to a preventive health check for a person – but we do not do this either simply by standing in front of the mirror and concluding that “everything looks good”. A superficial examination does not always show the true picture. And the longer we don’t conduct more in-depth examinations, the greater the risk of discovering an already well-established illness.

It is the same with the forest. The inventory should not be seen as a “search for litter”, it is a determination of the value of the forest, however, the inventory can also help to reveal conditions that may harm the forest (flooded areas, pests, reckless economic activity near the forest, etc.).

Who does the inventory and what does the owner get in the end?

If our health is checked by doctors, the forest inventory is carried out by certified forest inventory workers. The existence of a specific specialist’s certificate can be confirmed in the register of certified specialists, which can be freely found on the Internet.

When concluding the contract, the specialist will want to receive information about the forest already available to the owner – previous inventory data, a copy of the land boundary plan, etc., which can be useful in the inventory process.

The duration and costs of the inventory depend on both the area and composition of the property. Surveying a few tens of hectares will definitely take less time than inventorying a large property. Therefore, before starting the work, it is necessary to agree on the exact deadline and costs of the work, so that there are no disagreements later. Climatic conditions can also affect the inventory, for example, if the territory was affected by floods in the spring. The specialist will definitely inform the owner about the possible risks and burdens.

During the inventory, the specialist will find out and record information about the type of forest, types of forest land, wood resources in the forest and its composition (coniferous trees, deciduous trees, age of trees, etc.), habitats in the territory, protective belts and infrastructure objects – trails, forest roads, ditches, also for abandoned buildings, about which perhaps there was no idea before, etc

All the information obtained in the inventory will be received by the owner of the forest, and this data is also transferred to the State Forestry Service, so that, as mentioned above, the state services also have accurate information about the real situation in nature.

Cutting or selling without inventory data will not happen

The forest inventory is one of the most important documents required if the owner wants to sell a felled forest or a forest, according to SIA “Baltu koks” experts. If you have even thought about selling your forest property, first of all, look for an inventory file. SIA “Baltu koks” has been operating in the forest sector for 25 years, and the company’s experts are repeatedly faced with situations when forest owners want to sell the forest “immediately and now”, but the inventory file cannot be found and sometimes even the owner does not know whether it has been done at all. Then the forest owners have to be upset that an inventory must be taken first and only then can negotiations be held on the sale of the forest.

True, the inventory can also be carried out by the certified experts of SIA “Baltu koks”, so you will not have to look for another cooperation partner.
