Following the citizens’ initiative, the Riga municipality is renovating Mazo Krasta Street

In March, improvement works started for the participation budget project “Zvirgzdu Island Heritage: The Revival of the Small Coast”, which involves improving the beginning of Mazās Krasta Street and transforming it into a well-maintained public space.

During the construction, the asphalt pavement and curb stone of the pedestrian sidewalk will be restored, trees and ground cover plants will be planted, as well as the existing vegetation of the green area will be cleaned.

The place known today as the beginning of Mazās Krasta Street has historically been an example of recreation and improvement in the suburbs of Latgale. In the 1930s, there was a swimming place, a place for walks and recreation for the residents of the area, by the Zvirgzdu Island canal, which has now been filled up.

This section of the street serves 150-300 people from all the neighborhoods of Riga every day. The beginning of Mazas Krasta Street forms the only access road to the pedestrian and bicycle tunnel to the Daugava Promenade, an organic neighborhood square has been created here – a public space and a meeting place. Children and adults meet here, walk, ride scooters and bikes, use the road to run and walk dogs.

The total cost of the project is 63,251 euros including VAT.

The purpose of participatory budget projects is to promote the development of neighborhoods in Riga, the special identity and recognition of their territory as a part of the city, to promote their revitalization, to stimulate the formation of the local community.

Applications for the new participation budget project competition started in March. Tender applications will be accepted electronically until May 31 at 12 noon, by filling out the project application form and submitting it to riga.lv or sending it to the electronic mail address [email protected].

Applications can also be submitted in person until May 31 at 12.00 at the Riga Neighborhood Residents Center (RAIC) points on Eduarda Smilģa street 46, Daugavpils street 31, Gobas street 6A, Ieriķu street 43A and Brīvības street 49/53.
