In March, the President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, in the Riga Palace (Mr. Rob Bauer), to discuss the strengthening of NATO’s Eastern flank and preparations for the NATO summit in Washington, as well as support for Ukraine and Ukraine’s integration into NATO.

The President emphasized the importance of implementing the decisions taken at the NATO summits in Madrid and Vilnius, and also assessed the presence of soldiers of NATO allies in Latvia. “NATO must implement the decisions and regional defense plans adopted at the Madrid and Vilnius NATO summits, especially in terms of deterrence and defense. The deterrence capabilities of the alliance must be strengthened and the protection of the territories of NATO member states must be ensured from the first centimeter,” noted E. Rinkēvičs.

The President pointed out that the presence of NATO allied soldiers in Latvia practically proves NATO’s collective defense. E. Rinkēvičs also confirmed that Latvia, as a host country, continues to invest in military infrastructure to ensure the best possible conditions for allies, as well as constantly invests and strengthens its defense capabilities.

During the meeting, the President also emphasized the need for NATO to provide systemic and long-term support to Ukraine in order to ensure its victory, and expressed his support for closer integration of Ukraine into NATO.
