The first of the new projects from Sir Peter Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh, as well as Philippa Boyens, is tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Warner Bros. announced this week. Discovery.”
It will be directed by the star of the first film, Andy Serkis, who played Gollum. Walsh and Boyens, as well as Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, are invited to write the screenplay.
“Yes, my dear,” Serkis said in an announcement about the new films.
“It’s time to once again venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and indispensable guardians of Middle-earth, Peter, Fran and Philip.”
“It is a great honor and privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and colleague Andy Serkis, who has a unfinished relationship with Gollum!” Jackson, Walsh and Boyen said in a joint statement.
“As lifelong fans of Professor Tolkien’s vast mythology, we’re proud to partner with Mike DeLuca, Pam Abdi and the entire team at Warner Bros. for another epic adventure!”
Peter Jackson made history with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, becoming the first person to direct three major feature films at the same time.
The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King were nominated for several awards, including the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs.
Serkis co-directed Jackson’s second trilogy, The Hobbit, as well as 2021’s Venom.
