The cinema. From May 5, a documentary film by director Dzintra Gekas will be shown in cinemas in Latvia Juris Jurjāns. Seven days of painting, talking, silence, which tells about the artist’s desire to paint until the end of his life. The portrait film reveals the world of the painter Jura Jurjānas (1944–2023): it is a visually rich story about freedom in art, energy of life and virtuosity. The hero of the film chooses beauty as his theme and refuses to play by the rules dictated by age. He continues his daily rituals, sipping whiskey, smoking cigars and painting. The premiere will take place on May 4 at the Latvian film marathon in the Splendid Palace cinema. The special screenings, in which the film’s creative team will participate, will take place on May 6 at Splendid Palace, on May 8 at Kino Bize and on May 12 at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center.

Music. At the festival Latvian New Music Days The 80th anniversary concert of the composer Vilnius Šmīdberg will be held in the Riga Latvian Society (RLB) building. The jubilee music will be performed by Ilona Meija (flute), Magdalena Gekka (violin) and Iveta Cālīte (piano) – Trio for flute, violin and piano, Sonata for violin and piano, Variations for solo piano and the author’s recently created I cry dance overture for flute, violin and piano.

Theater. In the Theater House of the Latvian Academy of Culture (LKA). Horse mail will be able to appreciate two performances by students of the 3rd year of LKA Dramatic Theater Acting Art, staged by director and course leader Elmārs Senkovs. The new productions are based on a play by the German playwright Marius von Mayenburg Martyr/Märtyrer, which heralds social deafness. Each show features a different cast and tells the story from a different angle, so they should be seen as two distinct and independent works. In the show Martyrwhich will be shown on May 3 and 5, the main role will be played by Matīss Kučinskis, while in the show Apprentice On May 4, the main character will be played by Aleksandrs Bricis.
