Such a move would allow visitors, many of whom visit the Louvre just for this painting, to get a better impression,” Laurent des Cara told broadcaster France Inter.
“It’s always a shame when visitors aren’t given the best possible reception, and that’s the case with the Mona Lisa,” she said.
“I think a better solution is needed,” said des Kara, adding that the Louvre has contacted the Ministry of Culture about possible solutions.
The Louvre, which is the world’s most popular museum, was visited by almost nine million visitors in 2023.
Des Cara said 80% of them – 20,000 people a day – throng the Mona Lisa, often taking selfies in front of the painting.
The Mona Lisa is currently encased in protective glass in the Louvre’s Halle d’État, the largest room in the museum, but da Vinci’s masterpiece is not alone there.
Next to it are the works of 16th-century Venetian masters, and at the other end of the room hangs the Louvre’s largest painting – Paolo Veronese’s “Wedding at Cannes”.
