The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia expects that the crime situation will worsen in 2024. The number of particularly serious crimes may become the highest in the last 15 years, exceeding 152,000, this follows from the forecast of the Research Institute of the Ministry of the Interior analyzed by “Layout”.

The number of particularly serious crimes in Russia began to increase already in 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov said that figure then rose by 9.4% to nearly 125,000.

In 2023, the police have already registered more than 142,000 particularly serious crimes, forecasting 133,000. Now IeM predicts an increase of another 7%.

Factors that will affect the crime situation in Russia include the war in Ukraine and its aftermath. In particular, analysts pointed to the risks associated with the growth of the arms “black market” and the return of former prisoners from the front, who were recruited by Wagner’s PMC and the Ministry of Defense.

IeM pays special attention to the activities of wives mobilized within the project “Road to Home”. According to analysts, this can be a destabilizing factor, not least because the movement is allegedly “controlled by foreign intelligence”.
