Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, May 9, accused the West of creating the risk of a global conflict and announced that he would not allow anyone to threaten the world’s largest nuclear power, as Russia celebrated the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, Reuters reports.
Putin addressed regiments of Russian soldiers in Red Square, in a rare May snowfall.
As Russian troops advance against Western-backed forces in Ukraine, Putin accused “arrogant” Western elites of forgetting the Soviet Union’s crucial role in defeating Nazi Germany and fueling conflicts around the world.
“We know what the exaggeration of such ambitions leads to. Russia will do everything to prevent a global conflict,” Putin said. “But at the same time
we will not let anyone threaten us. Our strategic forces are always ready for battle.”
In World War II, the Soviet Union lost 27 million people, including many millions in Ukraine, but eventually defeated the Nazis, and in 1945 the red Soviet victory flag was raised over the Reichstag.
Putin said that Russia respects all allies who participated in the defeat of Nazi Germany, stressing that Russia remembers the decisive battles of World War II, highlighting Moscow, Leningrad, Stalingrad, Kursk, Kharkiv, Minsk, Smolensk, Kyiv and other regions. He stated that these battles played a decisive role in determining the fate of mankind.
Russia displayed minimal military equipment at the parade, displaying only one T-34 tank, while passing fighter jets flew over with the colors of the Russian flag.
The Yars intercontinental strategic missile was also on display at the parade, with a TV announcer stating that it has “guaranteed capabilities to attack a target anywhere on the globe”.
Western leaders did not attend the parade. However, the leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Cuba, Laos and Guinea-Bissau participated.
