More than a dozen people were killed or injured in an attack on a hospital in southwestern China on Tuesday, state media reported, without specifying the nature of the attack.
China’s state news agency Xinhua reports that the attack took place at a local hospital in Zhenxian, Yunnan province in the southwest of the country, and that more than ten people have been killed or injured so far.
An investigation has been launched into the incident that happened in the morning local time.
Photos published by the state news portal “Penpai Xinwen” show a man pointing a knife at another man holding a stick in the hospital lobby. Police officers are also seen at the scene.
Mass violence is rare in China. Its citizens are prohibited from possessing firearms, but there have been several stabbings in recent years.
Last August, two people were killed and seven injured in Yunnan when a man with a history of mental health problems attacked a crowd with a knife.
A month earlier, six people were killed and one injured in a knife attack at a kindergarten in southern China’s Guangdong province.
In August 2022, three people were killed and six injured in a knife attack at a kindergarten in Jiangxi province in the south of the country.
