President William Ruto, who had planned to reopen schools closed due to flooding next week, announced on Friday that he was postponing the reopening of schools until further notice.
In his State of the Nation address, the President said that “meteorological reports paint a grim picture” as Cyclone Hidaya is likely to hit Kenya’s coastal areas in the coming days.
The floods have caused damage to buildings, infrastructure and large areas of agricultural land. More than 150,000 people have left their homes and are living in camps across Kenya.
Kenya is currently in the rainy season and is expected to continue until the end of May.
The government has said that people living near 178 dams and reservoirs must evacuate or be forcibly relocated.
The water level at two hydroelectric dams has reached historically high levels.
The floods have also claimed more than 155 lives in neighboring Tanzania, where Cyclone Hidaya is expected to hit coastal areas. The disaster also affected hundreds of people in Burundi, Ethiopia and Somalia.
