The US leadership has agreed to withdraw its troops and sent a delegation to Niamey to work out the withdrawal of the troops.
A US withdrawal from Niger would mean a new regional advantage for Russia, which already supports military regimes in neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso.
According to US Defense Secretary Austin, the deployment of Russian forces at the base poses no threat to American soldiers. Russian units will be located in a separate base complex and will not have access to US forces or their equipment.
At Niger’s request, Russian military instructors arrived in the country already last month along with an air defense system and other equipment.
Russia has neither confirmed nor denied the news of sending its forces to Niger, saying that Moscow is building relations with African countries in all areas, including defense.
Even before the 2023 coup, Niger was the cornerstone of the US strategy to fight jihadists in West Africa. The country was home to a $100 million US drone base and about 1,000 US troops.
