Chisinau has previously repeatedly accused the Kremlin of trying to increase tension in Moldova.

During the night from Monday to Tuesday, around 150 Moldovans were searched, mostly at the Chisinau airport, police chief Victor Kernauteanu said.

In total, more than 20 million Moldovan lei (one million euros) were confiscated. With these funds, “illegal financing of political parties from dark sources” took place, the police said.

At an event in Moscow, the parties announced the creation of the political bloc “Victorie” (“Victory”), in the run-up to Moldova’s presidential elections and referendum on the country’s membership in the European Union in October. The new bloc is built around pro-Russian oligarch Ilan Shor, who is on the run from law enforcement and has been convicted of fraud behind bars in Moldova.

The chief of staff of Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Adrian Balutel, called the politicians gathered in Moscow “top servants of the Kremlin regime” in a post on the “Telegram” platform.

On the other hand, the acting head of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Moldova, Ion Munteanu, said that the actions of the politicians gathered in Moscow are being evaluated in connection with suspicion of treason.

“From our point of view, these actions tend to threaten national security,” Munteanu told Chisinau’s PROTV.
