Earlier this week, Google launched the Pixel 8a smartphone in India and it was all the tech community could talk about. The phone was launched on the evening of May 8, and the announcement came as a surprise as earlier it was being said that the Pixel 8a would make its debut during the Google I/O event scheduled for next week. Positioned as the successor to the Pixel 7a launched a year ago, the Pixel 8a comes packed with new features, including the built-in Gemini AI assistant and the powerful Google Tensor G3 chipset.

However, it retains the same design language as its predecessor and also has identical camera specifications. Let us take a detailed look at what is different and what remains the same in the Google Pixel 8a and last year’s Google Pixel 7a.

Price and storage option: The Pixel 8a comes with a starting price of Rs 52,999, making it a higher-priced alternative in the Google Pixel lineup. In comparison, the Google Pixel 7a launched at a starting price of Rs 43,999. Talking about the storage options, the Pixel 7a had just one variant with a 128 GB storage option. The Pixel 8a, however, also comes in a 256 GB storage option.

Processor: The Pixel 8a comes with the Google Tensor G3 chipset, which is also used in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. In contrast, the Pixel 7a features the Tensor G2 chip. With a newer processor, the Pixel 8a is expected to deliver a superior performance compared to the Pixel 7a. The Tensor G3 chip is expected to enhance overall efficiency and speed, ensuring a smoother user experience.

Design: Google has maintained a consistent design language across both the Pixel 8a and 7a models. With similar dimensions and weights, the main distinction lies in their color options. While the Pixel 8a offers aloe, bay, obsidian, and porcelain variants, the Pixel 7a comes in orange, light blue, black, and white colors.

Display: The Pixel 8a offers a higher refresh rate of 120Hz compared to the Pixel 7a’s 90Hz. However, both models share identical screen sizes and resolutions.

Camera: While both models feature identical camera hardware, the Pixel 8a introduces additional AI-powered features enabled by the Tensor G3 chip. These include Magic Editor and Best Take, enhancing the device’s photography capabilities beyond what the Pixel 7a offers.

Battery: The Pixel 8a holds a slight advantage in battery capacity, boasting a 4,492mAh battery compared to the Pixel 7a’s 4,385mAh. However, real-world performance may vary, and further testing is required to determine the actual battery life of each device.

In addition to this, both Pixel 7a and 8a have an IP67 dust/water resistant rating and feature Corning Gorilla Glass protection for the screens. Hence, the smartphones come with similar design and camera specifications. But the higher-priced Pixel 8a has a better processor, AI features, and battery.
