IRVINE, Calif. – In a doubleheader against the #17th ranked team in the nation for DII, CUI took on the red-hot Westmont Warriors. Game one of the doubleheader, both teams put on a scoring display with a season-high combined 24 runs scored in a nine-inning game.

The Golden Eagles were down 6-1 in the top of the 3rd after a three-run homerun from a Warriors player, but CUI never gave up hope, even down by five runs. The player that sparked energy in the team was Wyatt Madisonwho had a two-run bomb to right field, making it a 6-4 game in the bottom of the 4th.

Jumping to the bottom of the 6th, the Golden Eagles found themselves on a rally from players such as Trevor Walz with a sac fly ball to score a run, Evan Gott scoring on a wild pitch, followed by Micheal Dixon hitting an RBI single to make it a 7-9 game. Bottom of the 7th, Michael Mira laid down a beautiful sac bunt that scored two runs on a suicide score, tying the game 9-9. Despite a Michael Dixon HR to left field putting CUI up 10-9, the Warriors struck back, forcing extras.

The unsung hero of the first doubleheader game was Luke Glascoe. With bases loaded, Glascoe hit the go-ahead walk-off homerun to have the Golden Eagles take game one with a final score of 14-10 over nationally ranked #17th Westmont College on top of clinching a PacWest tournament spot to compete for a Pacwest championship!

Game two was a battle of the pitchers, with two of the best on the mound for the PacWest, Jake Coveycoming into the game at 5-1 vs the Warriors pitcher Ryan Humphreys, also 5-1 on the season. Jake Covey ultimately won the pitching duel, putting up great numbers, only allowing three runs on 11 strikeouts, and pitching a complete game.

Even though the Warriors opened the game up with a solo home run, Jake Covey settled in nicely, and his teammates supported him with the offense right off the bat. Responding to the solo HR, CUI scored two in the bottom 1st from an infielder’s choice, scoring Shane Wallaceas well as Haku Dudoit single to left center, scoring David Baruch, earning the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead coming out of the bottom of the 1st.
