Riga, Apr. 3, LETA. The national armed forces have started to provide support to VAS “Valsts nekustamie ipsumi” (VNĪ) and the State Border Guard in the construction of a fence at certain sections of the Latvian-Russian land border in order to deter attempts by illegal migrants to illegally cross the border, the Press Department of the Ministry of Defense informed LETA agency.

By the fall of this year, a fence of approximately 20 kilometers will be built with the help of the National Armed Forces. It is planned that approximately 80 soldiers and national guards will participate in the construction of the fence.
“We have made this project our highest priority. In order to achieve the fastest possible construction deadlines, we simultaneously cooperate with several construction contractors and the National Armed Forces,
which is a special case in the operation of VNĪ. Of the 16 signed contracts, 14 provide for the completion of works by the end of this year, but the construction of approximately 28 kilometers in particularly difficult stages will continue in 2025,” informed VNĪ board member Jelena Gavrilova.
It has already been reported that in March of this year, an interdepartmental agreement was concluded between “State Real Estate” and the National Armed Forces on the construction of a fence in certain sections of the Latvian-Russian land border.
Within the framework of the concluded agreement, “State real estate” acts as a general contractor, providing construction management, construction supervision, necessary technical support and being responsible for the progress of the construction process.
At the same time, since July 2021, the National Armed Forces provide various types of support to the State Border Guard in order to ensure measures to strengthen Latvia’s eastern border and deter illegal migration.
