Latvijas Televīzija will broadcast the Easter service from the Riga Dome Church, and will offer speeches by the leaders of Latvian Christian denominations. As every year, this year also Latvian Television will broadcast events from the Vatican.

The celebration of Christ’s resurrection is the most important event of the year for Christians. Thousands of people attend events in the Vatican, an incomparably larger number follow them live on various platforms, and Latvian Television will also offer its viewers the usual live broadcasts from the Vatican.

On Good Friday, the Good Friday Stations of the Cross will be watched live from the Colosseum in Rome. The Stations of the Cross is an ancient tradition of the Catholic Church, which dates back to the fourth century, when Christians went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The Stations of the Cross involves a wide variety of people, not just theologians and clergy. There have been refugees and migrants, families, prisoners.

On the other hand, on the First Easter – Pope Francis’ address “Urbi et Orbi” or “to the city and the world”. Until recently, the Pope was widely criticized for what he said in an interview with the Swiss public broadcaster RTS – a call for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine reacted decisively. The representative of the Vatican in Ukraine, Visvalds Kulboks, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, where he expressed his disappointment in connection with the statements of the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church regarding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

In the context of these events, the Editorial Board of Latvian Television also discussed the inclusion of broadcasts in the LTV program. The decision was that the broadcasts would take place. Without recognizing the specific expressions of the Pope, the Editorial Board decided that it is essential to give Latvian Television viewers the opportunity to follow the current Easter events, including broadcasts from the Vatican. In addition, appropriate tasks are given both in the Law on Public Electronic Media and their Management, and formulated as tasks of a public order.

Latvian Television has supported Ukraine in the first days of the war started by the aggressor Russia. We have reported on the progress of the war, visited Ukraine, told about the horrors of the war, victims, soldiers, refugees. Made documentaries. Helped in charity events, organized fundraising. And we believe with confidence that Ukraine will win and that not a single trace of Ukrainian land will be left to the invaders.

Also on this holiday of hope and rebirth, we are with every Ukrainian in the belief that no one will have to hide in bomb shelters in fear of their lives, their children’s and their parents’ lives.
