The delegation was also given the opportunity to visit the school tower, which is the highest point in the city of Bauska. After the tour of the Bauska State Gymnasium, the delegation went to the school’s assembly hall, where 9th to 12th grade students had come for the meeting. The ambassador told the audience that he took up his current position in August last year and that this is his first official visit to Bauska. M. Vīteks also noted that this year marks 25 years since the Czech Republic became a member of NATO, and that the presence of Czech soldiers in Latvia makes a significant contribution to strengthening the external eastern border of the European Union.

In the Czech Republic, NATO soldiers came to the assembly hall with various equipment, with the help of which they demonstrated to the students how to act in an emergency situation when a victim needs first aid. The soldiers also asked various questions related to providing assistance in various situations. Several high school students also demonstrated their knowledge and skills in helping the “victim”.

“The meeting seemed like a great experience for everyone who attended it. I felt calm after the words of the Czech ambassador, “We are not alone, but united”, says Kintija Gurkovska, a 12b student of the Bauska State Gymnasium, “I found the soldiers’ approach to introduce young people to the most basic first aid actions very interesting. Young people themselves were also involved in activities where they could test their knowledge and first aid skills. I also really liked the fact that the audience was involved in the lecture, because sometimes just sitting and listening is not that interesting, but here it was thought about. This meeting was definitely one of the most interesting and at the same time educational that I have attended.»

He also showed his skills

11c student Kristers Ozols was one of the young people who also showed his skills in providing first aid. “During the visit, I gained new knowledge about first aid measures even in war conditions. I think that for me and my peers, such visits to the school create more interest in the representatives of the relevant professions,” says K. Ozols about the visit, “the most interesting thing was to hear the level of English of people who have been in the professional service for several years – it showed that we have no less an open door to future achievements».

M. Mengote accompanied the delegation throughout the visit to tell the guests the planned information about the educational institution in English. The young woman admits that the main benefit for her personally during the visit was communication. “I don’t manage to use the English language so often in everyday life to constantly improve my skills,” admits M. Mengote, “in my opinion, this visit is more of an exchange of experience. Especially at the secondary school stage, it seems important that we are given the opportunity to meet with representatives of various professions, so that we can understand for ourselves what we want and what we are capable of.”
