Latvian and Lithuanian energy companies are helping to restore Ukraine’s energy infrastructure damaged during the war.
Kontekst.lv told the company “Augstsprieguma tīkls” (AST).
AST has already donated several times to support Ukraine and restore its energy system and will continue to do so, company representative Liva Jaeger said: “Last year, we already handed over 22 vehicles to Ukrainian colleagues – car towers, passenger cars and all-terrain quadricycles, as well as others.”
Last year, Ukraine received 66 tons of oil for various high-voltage network equipment and transformers from Latvian energy workers, which Ukrainians will be able to use for at least 20 years to restore their energy system.
Latvian energy engineers, in cooperation with Ukrainian colleagues, find out what equipment and materials Ukraine needs the most. After that, the equipment, which is at the disposal of Latvian energy companies, is handed over to the Ukrainian side.
Recently, a group of Ukrainian energy experts visited Lithuania to evaluate the possibility of using equipment from previously closed Lithuanian power plants and the Ignalina NPP. It was reported by the newspaper “Novaja gazeta.Baltija”.
In 2015, the Vilnius thermal power plant was stopped in Lithuania, as well as the operation of units 1 and 2 of the Elektrēni power plant. On the other hand, Ignalina NPP was closed in 2009. The Ministry of Energy of Lithuania believes that the closed power plants could become “donors” by restoring the power plants destroyed by the Russian army in Ukraine.
