Latvijas Televīzisia joined RPP inspectors on Thursday to observe how safe people feel in Brasa. The pilot project will end on Friday.

The municipal police interviewed more than 120 people. In general, people in the neighborhood feel safe and there are more positive responses than negative, but the most frequent complaints of residents have been highlighted, RPP inspector Rolands Boitmanis said:

“It’s security in parks, cemetery grounds, lighting. Maybe not such crimes, but dogs without leashes.”

The Great Graveyard is one of the main places that the residents call an inauspicious place where they do not like to be.

This was also confirmed by Victor, who has lived in Bras for 21 years: “In the big cemeteries, well, that’s the basic principle – you probably shouldn’t walk in the night hours, if you’re not specifically looking for a problem.”

The police emphasized that the idea of the security tool is to react very quickly to the obtained data.

With many residents feeling unsafe in the Great Cemetery, police say there are likely to be extra patrols there from May.

With the help of the tool, it will be possible to analyze, for example, how often patrols are needed, stated Stanislavs Šeiko, RPP’s chief specialist in strategic planning issues.

Residents are also worried about drunken people and people sleeping in public, the lack of lighting in the area of the graves also increases the insecurity. The presence of the police would improve the sense of security, RPP inspector Anna Marija Ambaine expressed confidence: “Regular police patrolling, which results in, let’s say, fewer people sleeping on the streets, the same, let’s say, when inspecting parks. You feel safer because you feel the presence of the police in some in unlit places.”

On Friday, the parties involved in the project will meet to compare the results and discuss how it went. The survey will be repeated in Brasa in the fall to see if anything has changed. Most likely, this tool will also be used in other areas of Riga.
