Excitement, uncertainty, whether they will make it in time – this is the everyday life of many residents of the Jelgava side, using railway passenger transport.

Ina: “I need to hurry to school after my granddaughter. Now the train turned out to be four minutes late. I was hoping that maybe the bus would also be late, but it left on time, yes. Being late with the train often happens.”

Denis: “It’s been seven times in a month [kavēšanās]. I went to the bus, and that’s it!”

When asked how often the Riga-Jelgava, Jelgava-Riga route is delayed, “Pasažieru vilciens” did not answer, only stating that the overall accuracy of the trains in February and March was over 98%.

“Latvijas dzelzceļa” stated that construction works for the modernization of passenger platforms at seven stops are currently in the final phase.

Agnese Līcīte, the representative of Latvijas dĺzceļa, said that the changes in train movement determined during the construction works, for example closing one track, reducing train speed and similar changes, are coordinated with all responsible parties in a timely manner.

Viktors Zaķis, the representative of the Directorate of Motor Transport, also confirmed that the company is aware of the delays, but does not plan to contact the passenger carrier to apply possible sanctions:

“As for non-fulfillment of journeys in connection with repair works – also on the road, if the bus cannot fulfill the journey due to road repair works, there cannot be sanctions imposed on him, it is not his responsibility, it is not his inaction.”

During the last month, “Passenger train” has received 20 applications for ticket compensation from passengers of the Riga-Jelgava, Jelgava-Riga railway lines.

In the section Jelgava-Rīga-Jelgava, both the planning of the speed increase project and the passenger platform modernization works will be completed by the end of this year.
