“Pallet heating is planned to be banned”, “firewood and briquettes will not be used either – even in rural areas, even from willows and alders grown on the ground itself” – such alarming statements were published on the website “X” on Wednesday after the users of the platform got acquainted with the Saeima’s Department of Agriculture, to the documents attached to the agenda of the April 16 meeting of the Agrarian, Environmental and Regional Policy Commission on amendments to the Energy Law. The Ministry of Climate and Energy (KEM) emphasizes that nobody plans to ban pellet heating.

Concern among the readers of the documents has been caused by the proposal to establish in the law “the obligation to use an efficient source of renewable energy resources or emission-free heat supply technologies (technology that does not generate greenhouse gas emissions or emissions of air pollutants in its operation, such as a heat pump, solar collectors), applying this requirement to new single-apartment buildings houses or to the renovation process of such houses, if the heat supply system of such a house is also renovated.”

“Households will be able to continue using pellets, briquettes and firewood (biomass fuel) for heating purposes in their homes. The proposals prepared by the Ministry give the choice to use biomass (pellets, briquettes, firewood) or emission-free technologies – solar collectors and panels, heat pumps for heating in renovated houses or new buildings. The essence of the bill amendments is to ensure a cleaner and environmentally friendly use of fuel, for example by replacing coal, thus improving the air quality in cities and reducing the costs of citizens in the long term,” explains the Minister of Climate and Energy Kaspars Melnis (ZZS).

The Ministry emphasizes – “Green course” provides opportunities to use efficient, environmentally friendly heating systems, the use of which not only allows us to live in a clean and tidy environment, but also saves money. Currently, more than 11,000 different environmentally friendly technologies have been installed in Latvia with state support – biomass boilers suitable for pellet fuel, heat pumps, solar collectors with storage tanks, etc.
