“We can’t stand this madness!” A mountain of garbage near a house in Riga has been driving people crazy for several months; the police are powerless

Some time ago, a resident of Riga told about the disorder near the house at the intersection of Slokas and Eduardas Smilģas streets on social media, claiming that the pig sty has been there for three months. Noting the Riga municipal police in the recording, he said that the security guards had already been informed about this disorder.

“Without Tabu” surveyed the neighborhood and made sure that the sight there was truly terrible: a large amount of belongings, mostly clothes, but also furniture, were scattered around the house. The street stretches past the house, pedestrians and drivers are forced to look at the big mess. The residents who were heard expressed their indignation at the mess and the inability of the police to force the owner of the house to clean up his property.

The Riga Municipal Police (RPP) told the program that the security guards were aware of the disorder. It was recorded already at the end of last year, and the municipality brought the pigger to justice, RPP informed. True, it has not improved the situation in any way: mountains of garbage still surround the property, driving the residents of the neighborhood crazy, the policemen tolerate absences.

The police informed that the owner of the house is fighting for the eviction of the tenants through the court. While the legal proceedings are ongoing, he allegedly put the tenants’ belongings on the street. The owner of the house cannot remove them, for example, to the landfill, until the legal proceedings are over.

The people of Riga do not think it is logical to implement such an order in the property, polluting the environment and driving the society crazy. Belongings could be taken out of the house, but placed in a container, for example, said the indignant residents.

The public outrage is completely understandable. It should be understood that this is a non-standard situation. In a normal situation, if there were no legal proceedings, a cleanup order would be issued immediately, and if the person does not cooperate, a fine would be imposed.

The police said that the legal proceedings between the landlord and the tenants are nearing the finish line. “Accordingly, we will be able to oblige the owner to collect this waste. The owner is focused on cooperation. According to the information provided by him, it will all be collected in the near future,” said RPP representative Māris Ķipurs.
