The offer includes both decent food for the festive table, sweet treats, and products for strong health, as well as clothes, jewelry and things for the household.

Spring dresses and sweaters with floral images attract the eye. They are made in the small “Feel the Style” factory in Mārupe. Owner Dagnia herself draws watercolors, then scans and prints them on clothes.

“I like flowers myself, and so do the buyers. We are in Liepāja regularly, maybe even too often because relatives live here. Every time, new people come and buy the clothes,” she says.

In this technology, you cannot print on natural materials from which clothes are made, so the image is printed on polyester satin and it is durable, does not fade after washing. Dagnia also has an online store, but of course people want to see and touch the clothes. “Markets are holidays,” admits the producer.

The grandparents of Zane’s husband, a jewelry dealer from “Saules Akmens”, were folk hairdressing masters. “18 years ago, my grandmother said – you should do something yourself! The first market was at the Open Air Museum, I thought, how will amber be sold here, who will come. But grandma showed me how to fall in love with all of this,” she says.

Zane says that people in Liepāja know about amber in the same way as about boletus – where it grows and at what time. I was lucky enough to find larger pieces in Pāvilost and Mazirbe. The husband makes jewelry, she trades.

“I don’t have the patience to make anything at all, but I can talk to people again. That is why we are driving from Riga to your wonderful city,” says Zane.

Have you tried pine cone flavored chocolate? “Mītava čiekurs” has come to Liepāja for the first time. Saleswoman Linda says that pine pollen is added to salad dressing and face or hand cream, you can add a teaspoon to tea. She thinks that nobody anywhere in the world has thought of adding pine cones to chocolate before. People wonder how they can eat cones.

“Colleagues have tried everything. If the child is given syrup, then it is medicine and is not so well liked. If you give the same pine bud syrup with jelly candies, it’s a completely different thing,” she says.

Folk belief says that on Easter you should eat everything that is round and yellow, and these are the rolls of “Ieva’s cheese”. “It is still morning, but buyers are buying,” says Lāsma.

“In Liepāja, markets are going very well. I like people for themselves, they are different here, probably because they are from Kurzeme. The atmosphere here is very cool. Of course, there is competition for cheeses, but those who like them always buy and look for our cheeses.”

Due to the good taste, the buyers of Liepāja liked meat products and bread from “Ražots Salacgrīvā” brought from far away. “We always try to get back to you,” says saleswoman Elina. “Those who know are already waiting for us. Whatever the weather, people always come to the markets in Liepāja.”

There is really no shortage of buyers, people go around more than one circle just to explore and taste. Gunita and Diana come towards us with their hands full.

“I’m going to get a clay pot for a gift. We all already have them at home, we are fans,” says Gunita. After buying quinces, granddaughter Madara needed sweet balls. There is no need to buy eggs because Gunita’s mother has chickens. “On Easter we will go to visit my sister in Ventspils, it’s her birthday, so it will be a double celebration,” says Gunita, but Diana adds that they will eat together and celebrate.

Ineta and Kristine really like the market. Having bought a fish, I’m going to look at other products. “We look forward to the markets, I come every time,” says Kristine. “It’s different here, you can push each other. There is a different assortment, home producers come, whose products are not available in stores.”

Ineta adds that you can meet acquaintances at the market. In order for Easter to be successful, you need eggs to color and fight. Otherwise, celebrating in the family is calm, but certainly self-indulgent.
