Such situations can be seen from time to time in the inner courtyards of Riga buildings – on a narrow road with only one lane, two drivers are driving each other.

A reader contacted LA.LV by sending a photo and her question: “From time to time, such smart people block all traffic near our house. They stood there for over half an hour this morning trying to decide who had the upper hand. Discussions were sometimes quite loud. But what about the rules in this case?”

I contacted my driving instructor Werner Prancean from “Vanags” driving school, trusting that he will know the answer to this question. He has been licensed for 20 years, and for 9 of them he has been working as a driving instructor.

Looking at the photo, he initially answers it briefly:

And then explains his point of view: “Everything is very simple. The one who drives in his own lane has priority. Whoever is driving in the opposite direction must go in reverse. The only thing is that if the person who was driving in the opposite lane had already entered it in time, he had nowhere to go, but the person who was driving in his own lane saw it in time, he was not allowed to drive in the opposite direction.”

The instructor also points out that there may be cases when both drivers have been driving in the same lane for a long time, without seeing each other, for example around a bend, then solidarity works. The one who knows that there is an intersection or niche closer to him in reverse, most likely, he gives way and lets the other one go.

In the basics, however, the leading principle is that the one who drives in his own lane has priority.

Is it worth calling the police in such a case? It’s better to agree on your own and not make a fuss. The police will not say anything new, except that priority is given to the one driving in his own lane. What other questions can there be?
