At the meeting of the Riga City Council on Wednesday, March 27, the deputies adopted new rules for the use of shared vehicles, which envisage setting both speed limits and special areas for parking micromobility tools.

From May 1, shared electric scooters and bicycles can be parked in Old Riga only in specially created places, which means that the entire Old Riga will be in the parking prohibition zone. On the other hand, from June 1, this zone will be extended to Elizabetes iela and will gradually be introduced throughout the territory of the historical center of Riga.

The new regulations stipulate that in the speed limit zone, in the historical center of Riga, the speed of a shared vehicle may not exceed 20 km per hour. Among them, it will be forbidden to park a shared vehicle in the parking prohibition zones, except for the micromobility equipment parking places indicated on the map.

For the provision of shared vehicle services, only vehicles equipped with a system that regulates speed and parking will be allowed, adapting it to the shared vehicle speed limit zones and parking prohibition zones indicated on the map.

Improperly parked vehicles will be moved by the service provider immediately, but not later than within three hours. It will be controlled by the Riga municipal police.

With the changes in the binding regulations, it will be achieved that users of shared vehicles in the territory of Riga will be disciplined, they will be able to move at a maximum driving speed that the user himself cannot set, and the user will also be forced to park the shared vehicle in such a way that it does not endanger other road users.

Speed limit zones and parking prohibition zones for shared vehicles will be published in the “Traffic and Mobility” section of the “Geo Rīga” website of the municipality’s data disclosure portal www.georiga.eu.
