Youth International Programs Agency (JSPA) and the European Information Network Eurodesk invites young people to join the celebration of the European Youth Week by participating in the international event “Hop on the train of Europe” on April 19 and 20. As part of this, it will be possible to travel by train from Riga to the Estonian city of Valga.

The purpose of the event is to increase the participation of young people in decision-making by getting involved in shaping their future at the regional, national and international level, as well as to promote the participation of young people both in the European Parliament elections and in the European Union programs “Erasmus+” and “European Solidarity Corps”.

The first part of the “Hop on the train of Europe” event will take place on Friday, April 19, from 5:30 p.m. on the Riga-Valga train, where 80 young people in a separate carriage will have the opportunity to engage in activities on civic participation, European Parliament elections and opportunities for youth mobility in Europe. The activities of the first day are planned in Latvian.

On the second day, April 20, the event will be joined by young people from Estonia, who will arrive in Valga by train from Tartu. In the border towns of Valka and Valga, activities for the promotion of youth participation are planned at various venues, which will be organized by young people, youth organizations and professional leaders of non-formal education. On this day, activities are planned in English.

Application for participation in the event

Young people between the ages of 16 and 30 who can communicate in English and want to:

  • understand the basic principles of participation and participate in decision-making at the school, municipal, national or international level;
  • learn more about opportunities for young people in the “Erasmus+” and “European Solidarity Corps” programs;
  • learn about the subject of the European Parliament elections;
  • improve your English language skills by communicating with your peers from Estonia.

In order to participate, it is necessary to fill out an application by April 9, 2024 (inclusive). questionnaire. Please note that the number of places at the event is limited! The results will be announced to everyone personally after April 10, informing about it to the e-mail address indicated in the application.

Participants must attend the event on both days. The exception is young people from Valka region, who can participate in the event either on both days (with departure by train from Riga), or only on the second day of the event – April 20.

Membership is free. Accommodation, meals, train Riga-Valga-Riga and organizational costs of training are covered by JSPA. Participants only have to cover the transportation costs to get to/from Riga Central Station to their place of residence, as well as bring a sleeping bag for sleeping on mattresses in the youth center.

About the European Youth Week

The European Youth Week is an event of the European Commission that is held every two years. This year it will be celebrated from April 12 to 19 in Latvia and elsewhere in Europe. It is dedicated to active civic participation and its motto is “Youth Vision”. The Youth Week will take place two months before the European Parliament elections, so special attention will be paid to democracy and the electoral process. The events organized within the Youth Week can be seen on the interactive map on the European Youth Portal.
