On March 7, the State Police received information that the body of a newborn girl was found at the sorting point of the waste landfill owned by SIA “Eco Baltia vide” in Grobiņa parish of Dienvikkurzeme district. The State Police is continuing the investigation.

Alise Zvaigzne, the public relations project manager of the “Eco Baltia vide” company, says that a huge amount of waste enters the factory every day, so it is not known exactly where the baby got into the waste. “What we can say is clearly no secret that waste comes to the sorting plant from many addresses, from several regions of Kurzeme, from several waste management operators.”

The State Police has opened a criminal case for the incident and ordered expert examinations to determine the cause of the newborn’s death. The pre-trial investigation in the criminal trial is still ongoing. Several versions have been tested during the procedural steps but have not been confirmed.

Representative of the State Police, Kārlis Mazurs-Mago: “At this moment, I would also like to address the public that the State Police invites citizens who have any information about women who have been pregnant, but at the moment, these women do not have an infant in their care, to contact the State Police. Any information will hurt the state police. We also allow, not only when talking about the Kurzeme region, but also allow for other regions, including the country, because different versions are being considered at this moment. Since any resident’s information will be checked, we will see whether it is useful for the criminal process or not.”

There is a possibility that the baby’s mother did not register her pregnancy, but it is known that the baby was carried to full term. Also, the information currently available to the police shows that the girl was born in February this year. The State Police calls on citizens to report if they have this type of information. It is possible to report by coming to the State Police, by calling the phone number 110 or by sending information to the e-mail “[email protected]”.
