In anticipation of the International Jazz Day, which is celebrated on April 30 not only on all continents of the world, but even in space, and every year, of course, Latvijas Radio 3 – Klasika also celebrates this event, tonight, April 29, at 6 pm, Latvijas Radio 1 will broadcast this event. the wonderful Swedish trombone virtuoso, singer and composer Nilss Landgrens and the winner of the “Great Music Prize 2023” Latvian Radio big band will perform solemnly in the studio.

In a conversation with Nils Landgren and Dāva Jurkas, we talk about the diversity of the concert program, as it includes several American composers (Bernstein, Simon, Webb), as well as music by German, British and Swedish composers.

“This program is very relevant for this time, but it is not a political commentary. It is music that is close to the heart and quite naturally becomes relevant,” emphasizes Landgren himself.

The American singer Beyoncé has included the spoken text in her latest album, which tells about how genres are theoretically easy to perceive – they have a clear, concrete definition. However, in practice, some may find them restrictive. Music is one, it should be enjoyed, shared with it, talked through it. Thus, when asked whether Nils’ characteristic mixing of genres is a conscious or unconscious process, the musician answers: “Absolutely unconscious.

It’s important to find music that speaks to you. It can even come from the farthest corners of the world, the main thing is that it creates the joy of sharing with the public and, in the end, you like it!”

The arrangement of Leonard Bernstein’s opus “Some Other Time” will be performed at the concert. Landgren knows how to tell that Bernstein spoke here about soldiers during the Second World War. Soldiers arrive in a city, fall in love with young ladies, but after a few days they have to leave and maybe Some Other Time they will meet again. The musician hopes that this will not be the last collaboration with the Latvian Radio big band.

Latvijas Radio invites you to express your opinion about what you heard in the program and supports discussions among listeners, however, reserves the right to delete comments that violate the boundaries of respectful attitude and ethical behavior.
