The Spanish government has decided to abandon the awarding of a national award in bullfighting

The decision has angered supporters of the controversial bullfight, while animal rights advocates have welcomed the decision.

Minister of Culture Ernests Urtasuns stated that more and more Spaniards are concerned about the welfare of animals, therefore the government has decided that it is not useful to keep the award that compensates for the abuse of some kind of animal. But Spain’s main opposition conservative People’s Party has already promised to restore the award if it returns to power.

The annual award, which was established in 2011 under the previous Socialist government and was first awarded in 2013, awards 30,000 euros to bullfighting winners.

In some circles in Spain, bullfighting is still considered exciting, and the leading matadors are considered celebrities. Supporters of the fights are convinced that bullfighting is an essential part of Spanish tradition and culture. But recently, their appeal has waned, and polls show that people, especially young people, are less and less interested in bullfighting. Data from the Ministry of Culture show that in 2021-2022 In the season of 2016, less than 2% of the country’s population attended bullfights.
