“Lithuania supports Mr. Mark Ruta’s candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General,” Nausėda said at a joint press conference after the meeting.

The Lithuanian president expressed confidence that the Dutch prime minister is a suitable candidate to succeed Jens Stoltenberg at the head of the alliance.

Nausėda said that she has known Ruti for several years, and the Dutch Prime Minister was one of those politicians who very early recognized the threat posed by Russia, changed his views on Russia and understood the threat to NATO’s eastern flank.

“It is very important that at this stage we have a person who is aware that the Russian threat is long-term, that the Russian threat manifests itself in several aspects – not only military, but also disinformation, cyber security, even as organized and instrumentalized migration,” the president said.

A successor to current NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg’s position is expected to be announced before the alliance’s summit in Washington in July.

According to NATO rules, no decision will be confirmed until consensus is reached on one of the candidates.

Currently, the United States, Great Britain and Germany have expressed their support for Ruth. Hungary has said it will not support Ruti because he has criticized Budapest.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas recently announced that Estonia will not oppose Rutte’s candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General and is ready to support the candidacy of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis as well.

On the other hand, Estonian Foreign Minister Marguss Cahkna announced on Tuesday that Estonia is ready to support Ruta’s candidacy. He pointed out that Ruta’s conviction corresponds to the principles formulated by Estonia, which would guarantee NATO’s ability to face all threats and challenges.
