The 20-year-old Frenchman was punished for an episode on March 29 against the New York Knicks. In this match, the San Antonio team celebrated a 130-126 victory in overtime. Moments after the final whistle, Vembanyama threw the ball into the stands to celebrate the victory. Although the Frenchman’s actions were not malicious, throwing or kicking the ball into the stands is a violation of NBA rules.
This is the first fine of the French super talent’s career. It is significant that Vembanyama earned the sanction for the most productive game of his career – he scored 40 points, collected 20 rebounds and gave seven assists against the Knicks.
On the season, Vembanyama averaged 21.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 3.4 blocks, the best in the league, in 66 games.
