After more than a week of coordination, the National Armed Forces (NBS) finally provided answers to the questions of the “Delfi” portal shortly before Easter about Latvia’s defense potential and who will protect the country in case of war. NBS acknowledges that in the event of a military conflict, young people conscripted into the National Defense Service will be the last to be involved in hostilities, and also reassures that the country has material reserves to clothe and equip all soldiers.

2023. gada Valsts aizsardzības koncepcija nosaka, ka NBS kara laika personāla apjomam jāsasniedz 61 000 cilvēku, ko veido 31 000 profesionālā dienesta, valsts aizsardzības dienesta, Zemessardzes, aktīvās rezerves karavīru un 30 000 vispārējās rezerves karavīru, portālu “Delfi” informēja Latvijas armijā.

Latvijas NBS rezerve atbilstoši Militārā dienesta likumam sastāv no divām daļām – rezerves karavīriem un rezervistiem. Rezerves karavīri tiek iedalīti divās kategorijās: augstas gatavības rezerves karavīri un vispārējās rezerves karavīri. Augstas gatavības rezervē tiek iekļauti uz pieciem gadiem no profesionālā dienesta un no Valsts aizsardzības dienesta (VAD) atvaļinātie karavīri. Viņi var tikt iesaukti uz mācībām reizi gadā piecu gadu laikā.
