The City Property Committee of the Riga City Council has supported the transfer of land for free use to the Latvian Football Federation. The land will be put into use until the real estate is needed by the municipality to ensure its functions, but for no longer than five years.
On the microblogging site “X” the topic is brought up “Yesterday the coalition of the Riga City Council decided on Lucavsala as the home of the football stadium. In order to ensure access to the stadium, infrastructure will be built from Bauskas Street to Mūkusalas Street. I am sure that for such costs of infrastructure RD could buy the available land on its own place and build a stadium, not to mention that Kazas seklis will be gone (it is a flooded area), as well as the recreation area of Lucavsala will be degraded with the construction of a street. I think it is more than clear that Riga needs a football stadium, but such a hasty action before the football elections, in a recreation area loved by Riga residents with huge construction costs due to flooding risks, is madness.”
Both commentators and common sense say that Lucavsala is not the most suitable place for the construction of such a huge infrastructure, as well as the limited availability of the island at the moment makes the total costs of the project unreasonably expensive.
The Riga City Council commented on the post: “Hello! According to planning experts, there are no small gardens on this plot of land, the area is not flooded and this is not a particularly popular recreation spot for Riga residents. In addition, next to this plot of land, the construction of multi-storey residential houses will soon begin. To ensure the traffic infrastructure, it is planned to build several more pedestrian and bike bridges both to Lucavsala and between Lucavsala and Zaķusalu, as well as the construction of a connection with the Southern Bridge has been foreseen in the planning documents for a long time.”
It should be noted that very close to Lucavsala, the company LNK has built a sports infrastructure with several football fields.
