The member of the Speaker of the Saeima, the former parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MA) Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica (JV) is a candidate to be considered for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (JV) said in an interview on Latvian Television program “Morning Panorama”, commenting on possible candidates for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs.

When asked whether it was the decision of the current Minister of Foreign Affairs Krišjānis Kariņš (JV) to resign, or “he was asked”, Siliņa answered that it was his own decision.

Speaking about when the new foreign minister could be decided, Siliņa indicated that the Saeima session will take place on April 11, which is also the “first date” when this issue could be considered.

At the same time, the prime minister emphasized that the new foreign minister has yet to be decided.

Commenting on the name of Kalniņa-Lukaševicas for the position of foreign minister, Siliņa stated that she is a candidate to be considered, as well as Saeima member Đirts Valdis Kristovskis (JV), as he has also historically been one of the leaders.

Siliņa, however, emphasized that a decision will be made on who will be the new minister of foreign affairs, stating that there is currently no clarity on which person could be promoted to the position of minister.

“Give us a little more time,” said Siliņa, noting that there will not be a non-party candidate for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, as there are quite strong candidates within the party.

As reported, Kariņš announced last Thursday after a meeting with Prime Minister Siliņa that he has decided to resign from the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs. Kariņš leaving the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs on April 10.

For several months now, the scandal regarding the private flights used by the delegations led by Kariņš during his premiership has been relevant in the public space, which has drawn criticism from a part of society.

From 2021 to September 2023, according to the information gathered by the State Chancellery, 613,830 euros were spent on private flights for the business trips of Kariņas and his employees, but together with the part of the costs covered by the European Union, the expenses reach 1.36 million euros.

Also, the General Prosecutor’s Office has recently announced that it has started criminal proceedings for the possible waste of funds in connection with the use of charter flights on these business trips.
