The organizers of the World Women’s Ice Hockey Championship are visiting the Riga City Council – Riga

On Tuesday, April 2, the organizers of the World Women’s Ice Hockey Championship visited the Riga City Council and the Chairman of the Riga City Council Viļņa Ķirš. The championship in Riga will take place until April 6, and during the tournament, the Latvian women’s hockey team will fight for entry into the A group of the I division.

“Riga is honored to become the hockey capital – it was like that last year, when the men of our national team fought for medals in the ice arenas in Riga and Tampere, and it will be like this again this year, when Riga hosts the teams of the World Women’s Hockey Championship. Latvia, with its women’s hockey team, first presented itself at the international level more than 30 years ago, the team has always had a powerful team spirit throughout the years, and I wish our ladies an excellent start in this hockey championship!” says Vilnis Ķirsis, chairman of the Riga City Council.

The championship in Riga will take place until April 6 at the Volvo Ice Hall.

In addition to the host Latvia, the women’s national teams of Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Great Britain and Slovenia also participate in the tournament.

The Latvian national team played its first match at the World Championship on March 31 against the strong Slovakian team, experiencing a loss, but on April 1, our national team won over Italy. On the other hand, on April 3, the Latvian national team will face Slovenia, on April 5 against Poland and on April 6 against Great Britain.

In general, the women’s hockey teams are divided into four groups and the top ten teams will compete in the world championship in the USA, while the other teams compete in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions.
