on May 12 at At 16.30, the Rothko Museum will screen director Dzintra Gek’s latest documentary film “Juris Jurjāns. Seven days of painting, talking, silence”, followed by a meeting with the film’s director and creative team.

In the documentary, director Dzintra Gek has created an engaging portrait of the Latvian painter Juri Jurjānas (1944–2023). The film reveals his world and embodies a visually rich story about freedom in art, the energy of life, virtuosity and the desire to paint until the end of his life.

The film about the emeritus professor of the Latvian Academy of Arts was made when the film crew, director Dzintra Geka and cameraman Viktor Grībermanis spent more than two years accompanying the artist in his daily routine, listening to his memories, reflections and insights about life and art.

Dzintra Geka is one of the most visible documentary film directors in Latvia, whose films have been welcomed and widely shown in Latvia and abroad. Her works contain many historically important and socially relevant topics, which are depicted in a complex and sensitive way, using authentic stories and personal experiences. Dzintra says: “Interest and meaning to create the documentary portrait film about the artist Juri Jurjānas was due to his unusual personality and charisma. His self-sufficiency, artist’s egoism, passion, childish curiosity about the world. The film is both a journey through the artist’s life and an in-depth reflection on the changes brought about by age and their impact on artistic activity. In other words, the film will be an affirmation of life and an inspiration to the audience not to give up, to live life to the fullest, with joy, regardless of the limitations that life imposes.”

The film team consists of director and screenwriter Dzintra Gek, cinematographer Viktors Grībermans, editing director Sandra Alksne, sound director Artis Lūsis, composer Arturs Maskats, music producer and conductor Sigvards Kļava, producers Dzintra Gek and Marta Romanova-Jēkabsone. The film was made in cooperation between film studios “GESTA FILMS” and “SIBIRIJAS BERNI”. The creation of the film was financially supported by the State Cultural Capital Fund. Distributors – “Baltic Content Media” and “Kino punkts”.
