This position is particularly competitive, with 33 galleries allocating space. The task of the gallery is the creation of a conceptual exhibition and the advancement of Latvian artists in the global circulation. Artists in collaboration with the gallery Alma so far have been able to realize their ideas in selected art markets – ArcoMadrid, ArtCologne, ArtBrussels, Artissima, ArtBerlin, NADA.

Art Brussels, attracting more than 26,000 visitors, art collectors and enthusiasts, is one of the largest European art markets. 177 leading galleries from 30 different countries present their artists and more than 26,000 visitors gather in the iconic Brussels Expo.

“Among the most prominent art fairs in the world Art Brussels stands out as an independent participant with its own identity. This is enhanced by its strategic location in a city known for its collecting tradition since the days of Rubens and Bruegel, as well as its constant status as a discoverer of new talent. The goal of the gallery is to convincingly present the artist and his country. During our activity, we have promoted the development of several artists important to Latvia, the representation of artists internationally and the appearance of their works in international circulation, in collections. The exposition was created as a small curated exhibition. Although there are still debates about and against the great influence of the art market on the direction of contemporary art, the fact is unquestionable – it is a force that plays an important role in the world of contemporary art. It is an opportunity and also a responsibility to position Latvian contemporary art to the widest international audience, promoting its involvement in international circulation. Next to the national pavilion in Venice, the participation of artists in large international exhibitions, biennials, regular participation of Latvian galleries in art markets of a significant level can contribute to the situation, so that the contemporary art of Latvia as a whole is considered noteworthy in the international environment,” say gallery representatives.

The visual artist represented by the gallery, Vika Eksta (1987), lives and works in Riga. Her projects are series of works in which, using photography’s ability to create a documentary sense of presence, the fictional and the real are merged. Most of her works reflect the artist’s personal experience. She manages photography, the work of the analog photo laboratory, is engaged in performance and audiovisual archive research, as well as conducts master classes in photography.
