It has already been reported that the partial legalization of marijuana for private use came into effect in Germany on Monday. The law stipulates that from April 1, adults have the right to keep 50 grams of marijuana at home for personal use, but they can have 25 grams of “weed” outside their home. They also have the right to grow up to three cannabis plants at home. On the other hand, from July 1, the so-called marijuana clubs will have the right to collectively grow cannabis for non-commercial purposes.

European countries have different regulations regarding marijuana, and its recreational use is still prohibited in most countries. Austria has no plans to follow Germany’s lead and wants to prevent any cross-border trade.

“Police will carry out increased inspections, especially in areas near the border, to remove addictive substances from circulation and to stop drivers under the influence of drugs,” Austrian Interior Minister Gerhar Karner said. “It’s about protecting all road users,” he added.

The Ministry of the Interior stated that plainclothes policemen and specialists from regional transport departments trained to recognize drug-induced symptoms will be involved in the patrols.
