On April 3 and 4, 2024, in Brussels, Minister of Foreign Affairs Krišjānis Kariņš will participate in the meeting of NATO foreign ministers, where NATO allies will discuss current security issues in preparation for the NATO summit in Washington.

The main topic of the meeting will be the strengthening of the deterrence and defense capabilities of the Alliance, including the implementation of the new regional defense plans and increased investment in defense. The move towards a more equal distribution of defense spending among NATO allies will be discussed. Latvia is one of the NATO countries that invests at least 2% of GDP in defense, according to the decision taken collectively by the allies.

Ministers will also discuss the threat posed by Russia to the security and interests of allies, as well as security challenges in the south of the Alliance. On the second day of the meeting, a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council is planned, where the strengthening of political and practical cooperation between NATO and Ukraine will be discussed, as well as ways to increase and adjust the military support provided to Ukraine.

A working session of NATO foreign ministers is expected with the participation of the foreign ministers of India and the partner countries of the Pacific region – Australia, South Korea, Japan and New Zealand – and the high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs, Joseph Borrell. Discussions are planned on the possibilities of cooperation and preparation for the NATO summit in Washington, where a separate session with the participation of the leaders of the countries of India and the Pacific region is planned.

A bilateral meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, Filipas Ivanović, as well as a meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the three Baltic States with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Annalēna Burbock, is also planned in Brussels.
