The celebration of World Children’s Day will take place on May 25 and 26 this year and is organized by the Dicastery for Culture and Education. This innovative initiative is an attempt to answer the question of what kind of world we want to leave for future generations. It is about putting children at the center and for us to care for them as Jesus did.

The event, which has the theme “See, I am making all things new”, will be held simultaneously in Rome and in dioceses around the world. Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonza said the pope came up with the idea after he met with more than 8,000 children in Paul VI Hall last November. The Holy Father wants children to be the protagonists of this event. Therefore, they were the ones who asked the Pope questions, and not just read the questions prepared in advance by the adults. This will also be the case during the world meeting,” emphasized Marco Impaliazzo. He is the leader of the community of St. Gilles, which is involved in the preparations. He revealed that children from war zones will also participate in the event, who will share their dreams of peace with their peers. Marco Impaliazzo described the upcoming celebration as “an injection of joy and hope for the Church”.

On the other hand, the prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education called them an experience of the Church’s communion, which is very necessary in a world plagued by division. “It will be the planting of a seed in the ground, which in time will bear abundant fruit, as it happened with the World Youth Days,” emphasized Cardinal Tolentino de Mendonza.

The main celebration will take place in Rome. At the same time, the Pope wants this initiative to take place in all dioceses of the world and to become a permanent part of the Church’s calendar of annual events. Priest Enzo Fortunato, who is the coordinator of the World Children’s Day events, informed that three projects (spiritual, solidarity and cultural) are being prepared for the participants, in which it will be possible to get involved with the help of volunteers already a week before the start of the meeting. The central event will be Saturday’s Vigil with Francis, where children will share their testimonies and question the Pope, as well as Sunday’s Eucharist. The organizers emphasized that it will be possible to talk about the number of participants of the children’s meeting only when the registration is over. Among the topics that will be covered are promoting peace, protecting the environment, and building a relationship with Jesus as a friend and teacher. Children aged 6 to 12 will be able to participate in the event. Each group of seven will have two adult chaperones. Registration for World Children’s Day began on February 2.
