Paparo said that China is watching Russia’s actions in the war in Ukraine very closely. Therefore, in his opinion, support for Ukraine is a pillar of deterring aggressor countries not only in Europe, but also in the Indian and Pacific regions, the admiral assessed.
“Russia’s failure to implement its aggressive intentions in Ukraine is a direct deterrent in the Western Pacific and reassures our strategic partners. Our most decisive action now would be to approve additional funding to help improve Ukraine’s self-defense capabilities,” Paparo said.
“China is watching Russia’s war in Ukraine and does not seem to see the futility of aggression. Instead, they are actively working to shorten the time to assess the strategic, operational and tactical environment in order to act quickly,” the military official continued.
Beijing has continued to step up its aggressive actions in and around the Western Pacific. China’s leaders are also trying to use economic, diplomatic and military efforts to reshape the international order according to their autocratic desires, Paparo said.
