She passed away at her home in Plains, Georgia.

“Rosalyn has been my equal partner in everything I’ve ever done,” the statement quoted former President Jimmy Carter as saying.

“She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalyn was in this world, I always knew someone loved and supported me,” Carter, 99, said.

In May, the first lady of the United States was diagnosed with dementia.

The former first couple were last seen in public in September at the annual Plains Peanut Festival.

Carter, a Democrat, was president from 1977 to 1981. After his presidency, he founded the Carter Center, which promotes human rights, democratic institution building, conflict resolution, and disease control. In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Rosalyn Carter also got involved in social activities. As during her husband’s presidency, her focus was on mental health and aging issues.

Rosaline and Jimmy Carter were married for 77 years and had three sons and a daughter.
