It has already been reported that the Latvian men’s hockey team reached the semi-finals of the world championship for the first time in history on Thursday, defeating Sweden in the quarter-finals in Riga with a score of 3:1 (1:0, 0:1, 2:0). Latvia will play the semi-final match against Canada and the fight for medals at the weekend in Tampere.
“I’m very proud and maybe I haven’t even fully understood what really happened. I don’t think I’ve ever played with a team like that,” Abols admitted in a conversation with journalists.
Abols, who has been playing in Sweden for the last few seasons, admitted that there are hockey players with significantly larger professional contracts in the ranks of the opponents, but the team play determines everything.
“We didn’t win because my substitution or someone else scored. In every game we have four substitutions ready to change the result. Today Rihards Bukarts and Mick Indrašis did a great job in attack. We had to spend more energy in defense, we also concentrated on that at the end.” said Apple.
In the semifinals, Latvia will meet Canada on Saturday in Tampere at 2:20 p.m., and the USA will play Germany at 6:20 p.m.
