The comic series “Our Flag Means Death” is based on the true adventures of the 18th century pirate Steed Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby (Rhys Darby). When Steed decides to give up the seemingly privileged life of a gentleman in his family to face the unknown, he soon becomes the captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Trying to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Steed’s fortunes change after a fatal encounter with the infamous Captain Blackbeard, played by The Twilight Saga (What We Do In The Shadows) star Taika Waititi (Taika Waititi).
“A stunningly funny, surprisingly moving journey into the unknown,” the series is described by the entertainment portal “Collider”, especially emphasizing the excellent duo of the main actors, surrounded by other brilliant actors of the comic genre – “you can’t wave a sword in a deep fog without hitting some outstanding talent.”
Rhys Darby is a New Zealand actor who mostly started in the comedy genre, appearing in the aforementioned “What Happens at Twilight”, portraying Jim Carrey’s character’s boss in “Always Yes” (Yes Man), as well as providing voice-overs for countless animated films.
Taika Waititi also comes from New Zealand, who successfully combines the career of director and actor. As a director, his career high point (and Oscar) came for the multi-award-winning Jojo Rabbit (Yoyo Rabbit), while as an actor he has demonstrated excellent performance in a wide variety of films, including a series of comic films. Also in the series “Our Flag Means Death” Waititi is excellent in both roles – he was nominated for the Television Award of the Hollywood Critics Association for both the director’s and actor’s work, where Darby was also nominated.
The series “Our Flag Means Death” received the Hollywood Guild of Makeup and Stylist Award for Best Historical Period Stylist and the Art Directors Guild Award for Excellence in Production Design.
