Latvian ice hockey player Mārtiņš Dzierkals, who represents the Swedish top league (SHL) club “Skelleftea AIK”, commented on his season in a conversation with the media “Aftonbladet”.
The 26-year-old Dzierkal has not had the best season this season, but he is a very valuable player in the minority. Dzierkals scored only one goal in 32 games in the SHL, but he had seven (4+3) assists in 10 IIHF Champions League matches.
It is stated that Dzierkals is the best SHL player in the minority. The Latvian ice hockey player has not lost a goal this SHL season, despite spending 38 minutes in the minority. “I don’t play in the majority, so it’s a great pleasure to play in the minority,” admitted Dzierkals. “It is part of my job and I don’t think there is any secret in these statistics. I just try to play actively, block shots and try to do everything to keep the puck out of the goal. Overall, we have a good minority and I hope we can continue like this.”
“Skelleftea” is the third best SHL team in the minority, but it is the most active unit in power plays. Dzierkal was asked if he was upset that goal scorers were highlighted more. “No, no. I have no problem with that as long as the team is playing well and winning. I give all my strength to the team. There is no doubt that the SHL is a strong championship. I have played in different places and there is no doubt that this is where the players work the hardest. I have a different role this year, but I’m making the most of this season. It will make me a better player. We have a good team and we will look to win trophies.”
