The head coach of the French national team and French league club Levallois Perret “Metropolitan 92”, Vincent Collet, in a conversation with the media “L’Equipe”, expressed his assessment of the first number of the last National Basketball Association (NBA) draft and San Antonio “Spurs” player Victor Wembanyam.
The 19-year-old Vembanyama averaged 19.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.6 blocks in 13 NBA games this season. Also, he attacks the basket with 42.9% accuracy, but makes long shots with 28.4%.
“Eight losses in a row… It’s not just about him, it’s about the whole team. We have to assess the perspective from the start of the season. He is averaging 20 points and nearly 10 rebounds. Looking at the statistics, he is quite stable already in the first season,” Kole said. “I’m a little disappointed with his shooting percentage. That’s not enough for a player like him. There are various factors in the game, including that he depends on his teammates as well. He really has something to improve there.”
Also, the coach of the French national team emphasized that Vembanjam must continue to progress in more aspects of the game. “He also needs to improve his connection with his teammates. Against the Sacramento Kings, he took 26 shots, but did not provide a single assist. At the same time, you have to be patient because the NBA season has only started four weeks ago. His dominance is often seen more defensively than offensively. And his influence on the level of defense of “Spurs” is also significant.”
