Since the evening of April 12, the male eagle Hugo did not return to the Durbe eagle nest. All this time, the two eggs were warmed by the female eagle Milda, until on the night of April 26, Milda did not return to the nest. On April 27, the two female sea eagles Milda’s eggs were taken by a raven.

On the “Facebook” page “Sea eagles in Durbé”, Ina Ābelīte, the watcher of the nest, writes: “Another episode of the Durbé saga has ended. What Mother Nature has in store for the future remains to be seen until next spring. Then again there will be waiting, joy, hopes and I really hope that we will get by without tears. If only for the joy of having raised eaglets. Since the sequel will follow…”

On the morning of April 28, the strange male eagle, or Zorro, arrives at the nest, pokes around the nest hole and even lays down inside the hole, then got up and jumped into the branch of Milda. And watch the surroundings.

This is what was experienced in 2021, when the male sea eagle Raimis disappeared, but the female sea eagle Milda, who remained in the nest, continued to warm the eggs.

Jānis Ķuze, an ornithologist of the Latvian Nature Foundation, wrote on the dabasdati.lv forum for sea eagle nest watchers: “It should be kept in mind that only approximately 60% of inhabited nests are successfully nested – in the remaining 40%, there are various possible reasons why the young birds that are capable of flight have not been reached. This is one example, and we already know it well, because we have experienced a similar situation in 2021. The chance that this nest will be successful this year is very small. Of course, a completely unexpected development of events can also happen, also the already mentioned case three years ago, although it ended with the death of the babies, turned out unexpectedly, when a foreign bird got involved in the nesting.”

About what happened to Hugo, Ķuze writes: “It is not worth speculating about the reasons for Hugo’s absence, there are many options and we will probably never know the real one.”
