Microsoft will continue to support Windows 10 for the rest of its life with regular updates. However, these updates will become smaller. That means faster downloads and faster installs for Windows 10 loyalists.

Will Windows 10 updates be stripped of Windows 11?

As an operating system, Windows 10 doesn’t have many options. Although still the dominant OS, its days are numbered.

Microsoft hasn’t completely given up on Windows 10 yet. The company may have confirmed that Windows 10 will reach its end of life in October 2025. However, the OS will continue to receive regular updates until the end of its life.

Windows 10 receives monthly security and quality updates from Microsoft. Microsoft has also announced an Extended Security Update (ESU) program for the operating system. It guarantees security updates and patches for a limited time at a high price.

Microsoft has confirmed that these Windows 10 updates will decrease in the future.

“(Windows 10 updates are released every month), creates a significant amount of content that can quickly eat up network bandwidth for users on slower networks. To reduce your network requirements, Microsoft is now taking a page from the Windows 11 playbook and reducing the size of Windows 10 update packages.

This basically means that Microsoft will deliver smaller updates to PCs running Windows 10. Microsoft has reportedly assured that these smaller updates will be faster to download and install. This does not mean that the company strips away the features and provides the essentials.

Microsoft will port the Windows 11 update mechanism

Microsoft has created Windows 11 with a new approach to product design. Moreover, its update delivery mechanism and pipeline are also designed differently. “This is achieved through efficient packaging, including removing inverted diffs from the cumulative update package,” Microsoft explained in a blog post.

Microsoft is essentially porting the Windows 11 update mechanism to Windows 10. From now on, Windows 10 will continue to receive the latest monthly cumulative update (LCU) package. However, these packages should be smaller.

Windows 10 users will have to decide quickly whether to upgrade to Windows 11 or get a new PC that supports the OS’s successor. However, until then, PCs running Windows 10 must have the Windows 10 July 23, 2023 Update (KB5028244) installed.

Windows 10 loyal users can download and install Service Pack Update (SSU) KB5031539 separately. This will ensure their computers are compatible with the new and optimized quality updates.
