Latvian men’s hockey team captain Kaspars Daugaviņš, after the first two games in the world championship, is tied for first place among the most productive players, according to the statistics compiled by the tournament organizers.

Daugavins scored three goals and two assists in the first two games, accumulating five points.

Canadian Connor Bedards has collected the same number of points in the first two matches, scoring four goals and making one assist, while Swiss defender Roman Josi has scored two goals and provided three assists.

Latvia has the 12th worst shot realization, sending eight out of 73 shots into the opponent’s goal, or 10.96%, while the leader is Norway, which has completed five out of 26 shots into the opponent’s goal accurately.

On the other hand, in the realization of the numerical majority, Latvia ranks 13th with one scored goal in eight majorities. In the first two games, the Swiss played the most successfully in the majority, who used six of the nine numerical advantages.

Latvian hockey players have scored one goal in eight matches and are in the fifth place in the division, while four national teams have not scored a goal in matches – the Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden and the USA.

The best goalkeeping line was for Finland, whose goalkeepers Emils Larmi and Harri Sateri, after conceding only one goal in the first two games, saved 42 shots or 97.62%. Latvia’s goal was guarded in the first two games by Elvis Merzlikins, who saved a total of 45 of 51 shots and ranks Latvia in ninth position.

Also, after the 20+5 minute suspension earned by Oskar Batnia in the game against France, Latvia is tied for first place among the most undisciplined teams with a total of 37 suspension minutes. The USA has the fewest rejections, having played only two minutes in the minority in two games.

After two rounds of matches in Group A in Prague, Canada and Switzerland have six points each, the Czech Republic has collected five, Finland – four, Denmark – three points, while Austria, Norway and Great Britain have no points.

In Group B in Ostrava, after two rounds, Sweden has six points, Latvia has four points, USA, Slovakia, Germany and Kazakhstan have three points each, and France and Poland have one point each.

The 16 teams participating in the tournament are divided into two groups, with eight teams each, which guarantees seven games for each team. The top four teams in each group will continue the medal fight in the quarter-finals, while the weaker teams in both groups will leave the stronger division, and next year will be replaced by Hungary and Slovenia in the top 16.

Last year, the Canadians triumphed in the world championships, beating Germany in the decisive match, while Latvia won the bronze medals, defeating the USA national team in overtime.

The World Championship will be held in the Czech cities of Prague and Ostrava until May 26.
